Molecular devices hold promise for displaying interesting functions and physical properties by taking advantage of the structural diversity of organic molecules. In general, common organic molecular wires show high contact resistance and large attenuation factors. This presentation will discuss our recent efforts in the the single-molecule conductance study of organometallic molecular wires with metal acetylide units. Employing the STM break-junction method, we observed high single-molecule conductance of the metal acetylide molecular wires as compared to the related organic oligoyne molecular wires. Furthermore, the terminal covalent metal electrode-acetylide bonding also enhances carrier transport properties. We also present further efforts towards, such as, developing long-range molecular wires, establishing robust metal-molecule interfaces, designing molecular switches, and exploring thermoelectric properties.
