Anna Lena May (member of the Cölfen Group) was awarded a poster prize at the annual conference of the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry in Jena, where she presented results from her Bachelor's thesis. In her work entitled "Grafting Polymerizations on Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Surfaces to Improve PEEK-based Bone Implant Material" she could show that surface functionalisation of polymeric materials for bone implants strongly enhance attachment of bone tissue. This has the potential to significantly increase the strength and lifetime of implants like hip joint replacements.
